on our Heritage
Situated in St. John’s Parish, MacDonagh Junction has served Kilkenny as a centre for trade, travel, commerce and the welfare of people for over 160 years. It has many historic links to Kilkenny’s past being the site of the former Kilkenny Workhouse, Kilkenny Central Hospital, Kilkenny Engineering Products and Castlecomer Colliery among others. Nowlan Park GAA grounds is also located in the area.
In latter years, the original site in which the development is located became unused and, in the mid 1990s, the idea of a new city quarter in the area was conceived by officials of Kilkenny County Council. Some twelve years later that concept came into being under the Kilkenny Integrated Area Plan and the Kilkenny County Development Plan.
The developers who proposed the winning scheme have entirely committed themselves towards creating one of Ireland’s most prestigious mixed use developments in Kilkenny. This came to fruition with the formal opening of MacDonagh Junction in November 2007.
